An iLoveToCreate iPad Holiday Giveaway!

They’re sure doing more than hanging mistletoe around iLoveToCreate studios. The company I blog for once a month (check out my recent holiday T-shirt project) is celebrating the season with a pretty sweet giveaway!  You can enter to win an Apple iPad — you know, one of those well-designed electronic tablets on which to read all your favorite inspiration sites and blogs all year long — you know, like (ahem) ilovetocreate.com or generation-t.com. Details below…

1 Lucky Winner will win:

Apple iPad Wi-Fi 16 GB – 3rd generation

Pick up the iPad and suddenly, it’s clear. You’re actually touching
your photos, reading a book, playing the piano. Nothing comes between
you and what you love. To make that hands-on experience even better,
they made the fundamental elements of iPad better – the display, the
camera, the wireless connection. All of which makes the third-generation
iPad capable of so much more than you ever imagined. Everything you do
with iPad, you do through its large, beautiful display. And when the
display is better, the entire iPad experience is better. The Retina
display on the iPad features a 2048-by-1536 resolution, 44-percent
greater color saturation, and an astounding 3.1-million pixels – in the
same 9.7-inch space. That’s four times the number of pixels in iPad and a
million more than an HDTV. Those pixels are so close together, your
eyes can’t discern individual ones at a normal viewing distance. When
you can’t see the pixels, you see the whole picture. Or article. Or
game. In ways you never could before.

Product Features

  • 9.7 Retina Display; 2048 x 1536 Resolution
  • Apple iOS 5; Dual-Core A5X Chip with Quad-Core Graphics
  • 5 Megapixel iSight Camera; 1080p Video Recording
  • Wi-Fi (802.11a/b/g/n); 16 GB Capacity: 1 x Headphones – Mini-phone
    stereo 3.5 mm, 1 x Docking / port replicator – 30-pin dock connector
  • Up to 10 Hours of Battery Life; 1.44 lbs

Giveaway ends December 31st at 11:59pm, open to US residents only, ages 18+. See Rafflecopter’s Terms and Conditions to enter please use the Rafflecopter form below. Good luck!

T-shirt Riddle Answer — We Have a Winner!

And the winner of the Generation T birthday giveaway, with the correct answer that Megan has 18 black T-shirts, 11 red T-shirts, and 6 white T-shirts (if W represents the number of white T-shirts that Megan owns, then we can make the equation W + (W+5) + 3W = 35. Solving, W = 6) is Nancy Cluff! (Of course, now Megan has one less white T-shirt since it’s going into the prize pack to Nancy, but I suppose that’s the trick answer…)

Thanks to all who played and stretched your brains — well over 30 total correct answers were submitted! The next giveaway happens when the Generation T Facebook community page hits 3,000–so please spread the word to your T-shirt refashioning friends who might like to join the ranks!

The T-shirt puzzle was adapted from the Mensa 365 Brain Puzzlers Page-A-Day calendar.

A T-shirt Riddle and Giveaway!

Many of you know how much I enjoy giving gifts around the holidays and since I just celebrated a birthday last weekend, it seems as good enough a holiday as any to host a Generation T giveaway. I hope you’ll agree! To enter to win this Generation T gift pack (includes a blank T-shirt and some surprise refashioning goodies), solve the riddle below and e-mail Megan the answer (megan@generation-t.com) by 5 pm (EST) on Friday, August 12. The winner will be selected at random from those who answer correctly and announced via the Generation T website and the Generation T Facebook page.

Here goes:

Megan owns 35 T-shirts whose colors are red, black, and white. She has three times as many black T-shirts as white T-shirts, and the number of red T-shirts she owns is five greater than the number of white T-shirts. How many T-shirts of each color does Megan have?

Happy solving!

How to: Rollover Tank Top

The Rollover tank top (project #42 in Generation T: 108 Ways to Transform a T-shirt) is located on pages 110 and 111 and was cut and stitched from my well-worn lavender Keep Earth Alive: RECYCLE T-shirt. Congratulations to Kiki, who wins a signed copy of Generation T: Beyond Fashion for being the first of our finalists to email me all the correct info!

And congratulations to the rest of you, too! Your sweet runner-up prize is this T-shirt tutorial for that Rollover tank top.

Materials:

1 T-shirt

measuring tape

scissors

tailor’s chalk

straight pins

needle

thread

Make it:

1. Lay the T-shirt flat and cut a 8″-wide loop off the bottom of the shirt. Set it aside.

2. Measure and mark 12″ from the new bottom of the shirt. Cut horizontally across at that mark through both layers of fabric. Then snip through the side of the loop, creating a long rectangular strip.

3. Lay the strip flat and mark a length equal to your bust measurement (x) along the long edge of the rectangle. Cut vertically to remove the excess fabric.

4. Fold the rectangle in half lengthwise, right sides together. Pin along the short ends and sew the edge with a whipstitch.

5. Remove the pins. Turn the resulting 12″-high tube right side out and lay it flat. Turn the loop from step 1 inside out and center it above the 12″ tube so that its bottom (cut) edge meets the 12″ tube’s top edge.

6. From both sides of the 12″ tube, measure 2 1/2″ in and mark with the chalk. Pin the tubes together between the two marked points and sew along the pinned edge using a whipstitch. Remove the pins.

7. Flip the shirt over and repeat step 6 on the back.

8. Try on the shirt and roll the top tube over 4″ to 5″ so the right side of the fabric is facing out. Rollover is complete!

Happy Earth Day from Generation T!

Circle ’round for for a brief, heart-warming, and perhaps eerily prophetic story from my childhood. (And read till the end–there’s a treat.)

In 1988, my town’s annual Earth Day poster contest held a special prize: The winning design was to be printed on T-shirts that would be distributed to students at the Sandwich Central Elementary School and available for sale to parents and other adults in the community. There I was, a young girl armed with passion for the earth, appreciation for the animals and plants that live on it, a full box of markers, and a blank sheet of paper.  My message was simple: Keep Earth Alive: RECYCLE. The words wrapped around a drawing of the earth, each continent and ocean playing host to an animal native to its land or water. I remember drawing the antlers of a moose in North America, the oversize beak of a toucan in South America, a humpback whale in the Atlantic… At top right is the newspaper clipping my mom saved to commemorate the event of my winning the contest–my two sisters are with me showing off the T-shirts. Though the poster, which I had so carefully colored in, was to be printed in black and white, the T-shirts, at least, ranged in color. My sisters each chose green and blue T-shirts, respectively, while my dad ordered the vibrant pink T-shirt shown here. He wore it for many years, and it bears a few ink stains–the requisite mark of an art teacher.

In the spirit of Earth Day contests, here’s one for you: Before midnight tonight, let us know in the comments what you’re doing to celebrate Earth Day, and be automatically entered to win a signed copy of Generation T: Beyond Fashion. Here’s where it gets interesting: Five finalists will be drawn at random and announced on the site tomorrow, April 23, 2011 at noon EST. A final challenge will be issued and the first of the finalists to correctly answer the trivia question posed is the winner! (Hint: Having a copy of Generation T: 108 Ways to Transform a T-shirt on hand for reference will be infinitely helpful.)

Merry Christmas Giftaway!

Warm wishes for a cozy Christmas and congratulations to Dia, who will be receiving the Rock the Tote tote bag (project #84 in Generation T: 108 Ways to Transform a T-shirt) pictured here as her Christmas surprise!

I made it using a turquoise blue “Caribbean Polka Cruise with the Stars” T-shirt and a bright yellow “2008 Theatre Camp” T-shirt that I found in a Florida thrift shop earlier this year! After stitching it up, I added two punk pins I made — because even bags need accessories.

How inspiring to hear all of you sound off on everything you’ve been busy making — I especially like to hear that so many of you have been using crafting or baking as a reason to spend more time with family and friends. Because as often as DIY can be a solitary activity, I love to craft with fam and friends, too (when I’m not crafting for them, of course!). I took a cookie baking class recently with my friend (no photos — everything was gobbled up too quickly!), I attended a chocolate truffle-making class with my husband last week — the results of which we’re sharing with his family today, and I’m sitting down with my niece to construct a batch of “Cheeseburger” cookies this afternoon. (I expect the sugar high to last through the New Year!)

So, I still have a few projects I’ll share after all the presents have been unwrapped on this end, but in the meantime, visions of your craftivities dance in my head: lots of T-shirt aprons, felted goodies, knitted dishcloths, ornaments, wreaths made from old Christmas trees, a pair of crime-fighting wrist cuffs with lightning bolts on them, scarves, gloves, cereal box wallets, fused plastic bag crafts, Kindle cozies, sculpted animal figurines, photo ornaments, baby hats, jam, hand lotion, pet toys, soap…and more! Oh, and let’s not forget all the baking, too: muffins, pumpkin gingerbread, macaroons, banana bread, rum cake, chocolate truffles, loads and loads of cookies, oh my!

Happy, happy Christmas, and to all a good year ahead!

A Gift for You.

Whew! It’s been busy over here in the Generation T workshop. We’ve been cutting and pinning and sewing and gluing up a storm in preparation for Christmas morning (projects which we hope to share with you post-Christmas — alas, there are too many gift recipients following the blog that it’d give away the surprise!). We’ve also made a little something for you! But, the thing is, it’s a surprise until Christmas day (you know, like Christmas!). So, your gift will be revealed (unwrapped, if you will) on Christmas and we’ll mail it the following week.

To enter the gift-away, leave a comment (on the blog or on Facebook) sharing a DIY element you incorporated into your celebration of the holiday season. Did you bake cookies? (I did — lots!) Did you make a salt dough menorah? Stitch up some stockings? Make a wine cozy to deliver that bottle of New Year’s Eve champagne in? Did you make tomato sauce from scratch? Inspire us! Limit 5 total entries per person. Entries will be accepted until midnight on Christmas Eve, EST. We’ll announce the gift and and choose the recipient at random on December 25, 2010!

Happy holidays, Megan & Generation T

The Winners!

Thank you so much to everyone who entered the Facebook fan giveaway! Thank you to all who make things with your hands. Thank you for your patience while I was busy cooking a massive Thanksgiving feast for friends and family (and fixing a website database glitch that prevented me from logging on yesterday!). And thank you for sharing what wonderful things you’re thankful for these past few days:

Patience and understanding, thimbles shaped like watering cans, crafty families, beautiful golden leaves outside, long weekends, things you’ve learned, dance, chocolate, a warm place to sleep, friends…and more!

Congratulations to our two winners Nicole (who is thankful for “my BFF/sister, best-est supporter of all my crazy ideas!”) and Alison (who is “thankful for my sweet baby boy”), who each win a copy of either Generation T or Generation T: Beyond Fashion (winner’s choice!), a pair of Generation T scissors (for all their T-shirt refashioning needs), and one “A T-shirt is a Terrible Thing to Waste” T-shirt.

And, of course, the thing that got this most recent giveaway started — thanks for following us on Facebook! Spread the good T-shirt word among your friends — there’s another party to be had when our ranks swell to 3,000!

From Generation T, we hope you all enjoyed a very happy and healthy Thanksgiving.
