Loving Philly

Yesterday was busy! After leaving the comfort of my apartment at 5 a.m., I arrived in Philly to do a quick stop-by at the 10! Show with cohost, Sheila (and a live studio audience!) where we refashioned a “Cereal Killer” T-shirt (picked up from a local NYC discount thrift store) into a bib (project#53).

Then we swung by 6 Action News for a taped “Saving with 6ABC” segment (to air in the next couple of weeks), where I refashioned a T-shirt into the Pin-up Girl halter top (project #1). But we didn’t stop there…

T-bird Halter Top on Threadbanger

One day last month I got a visit from Threadbanger in my workshop! We made my favorite halter top project, T-bird (project #47), from Generation T. So much T-shirt transformation going on in the world–keep it up, all you Threadheads! And thanks to Rob and Corinne for the lovely episode they posted today.

From the {Threadbanger} Archives…

In one of Threadbanger’s first episodes (and Generation T’s very first appearance), Rob and Corinne from Threadbanger refashion one of the no-sew tank tops from Generation T. it was featured on YouTube in March 2007, and has since garnered almost half a million views. Not too shabby!

Our friends over at Threadbanger were featured on CBS–congrats Rob and Corinne. Oh, and look closely for a very brief Generation T cameo!

Current TV

Here’s a video from my artist-in-residency at Garanti Gallery in Istanbul, Turkey. The program, part of the show “Hackers and Haute Couture Heretics” was organized by Otto von Busch as part of his doctoral work. Each week a new artist or group of artists turned the gallery into a craft lab with workshops in fashion upcycling, hacking, engineering, and more.

Uncommon Threads

This week, my sisters and I flew out to California to film two episodes for the DIY Network’s show Uncommon Threads hosted by Alison Whitlock. We refashioned seven white T-shirts into a wedding dress (Tying the Knot, project #108), which will premiere next January 2… Here’s Ariana wearing the dress against the green screen.

And here we all are (Sophie’s holding the bouquet made with T-shirt rosebuds, project #90 Nip It in the Bud).

And we refashioned T-shirts into a sleeping bag stuff sack, a Road Trip skirt (project #64, which Sophie is wearing in the group photo below), and car mats for an On the Road segment.

Thanks to our pals over at Campfire Goods for donating many of the T-shirts we used in the segments!

Good Day New York!

Happy Fourth of July! The folks at Good Day New York had me back for a beach-themed Tee Party. Bikinis and tank tops and beach blankets, oh my!

More Martha

Now that I’m reminiscing (and still sort of in awe of it all!)…here are some pictures we took on set before and after the show. I got my makeup done and my hair doused in product.

This is when I really got terrified! Look at the size of this studio!

And that studio audience!

And here are all of my fabulous friends (plus my brother from the audience) who were modeling outfits in the front row–Martha loved those legwarmers on Andra!

Martha, Martha, Martha!

Today I met Martha, one of my all-time craft idols! On the show, we refashioned two T-shirt projects from the book, Shoulder Chic (#15) and Outer Lace (#16), both no sew projects in the tank top chapter. Then she was nice enough to keep me on for another segment to teach me a fun and easy way of folding a T-shirt. The instructions had been printed on the back of a T-shirt that her producers gave me in advance–here’s a photo of the pillow I made for Martha last night:

And here’s a picture from the set:

And another. Could my grin get any wider?

Observations of my time on the show: 1) Studio audiences can be intimidating–it’s a lot easier when you can’t see the people watching you. 2) Martha was the first host who was tall enough so that I didn’t have to kick off my heels behind the counter. 3) Martha is a fan of Eminem. Seriously, we talked about it during the commercial break!

I’ll try to post a link soon! (And some more behind-the-scenes images to come…)
