There’s nothing like the perfect summer tank to get you through the dark days of January. As the pioneer project on the site, Tie Baby is a refreshingly easy no-sew design. That’s right, just grab your scissors and get busy. Finish it off with a knot at each shoulder for some double trouble. See you at the beach!
Ingredients:
- T-shirt
- scissors
Instructions:
- Lay the T-shirt flat. Cut off the sleeves just inside the seams and the neckband just below the seam.
- Make an arcing cut (through both layers of fabric) 2″ from the cut edges of one armhole, and repeat on the other side. Then cut 2″ in from the edge of the neckline to widen and lower the neckline, as shown. You should now have two straps to your tank top, each approximately 2″ wide.
- The tricky part: Cut on an angle into the side of the beginning of one strap and continue cutting along the 1″ midpoint for the length of that strap. Finish your cut on an angle on the opposite side of the strap as where you started. Repeat on the other strap.
- You should have four pointed strips off the top of your tank top, as shown.
- Pull the four ends of the strips gently to stretch the slightly and tie (knot) them, two over each shoulder. As a variation, change the location of the should knots—tie the straps in the front or back, near the base of each strap.

awesome… will be trying this as soon as i get home.
I really like this tank top project. It’s very pretty, but it also looks really easy to make. 🙂
I love it!!!! Thank you for this awesome project! I turned an odd fitting T into my favorite shirt!
Wow, I feel duped paying for shirts like these when I can make it myself!
Thanks so so much!!
I am going to try this with a top for 4th of July!!
I tested this out with an enormous t-shirt and it made a great nightgown…
Awesome! With a much smaller shirt, you can make a cute toddler dress (check out project #56 from book 2).
gerçekten çok pratik ve kullanışlı:) tebrik ediyorum
Senin tür kelime için teşekkür ederiz! / Thank you for your kind words!
this is a great idea would be cute to put a stencil on the front of it too when you’re done thanks for the idea!!
I did it with one of my husband’s tshirt, a color he didn’t like; I knotted my in a cross and it was better cause it fits tighter at the bust top. TKU so much, I am from Costa Rica and I am taking this to the beach! : D
